Welcome

Welcome to Baden-Württemberg – Welcome to the country!

There are seven regional open-air museums in rural Baden-Württemberg, seven large historical museums which invite you to visit the countryside in a rural setting and seven regions of south-west Germany which show the farming history, life and work of the past.

The concept which arose out of the co-operation of the museum, its supporters and the state of Baden-Württemberg has proven to be successful. Historical buildings and other remnants of rural culture have been and are found, taken piece by piece to the open air museum, re-erected and made accessible to the public. With the creation of open air museums, sites have been created where information as well as relaxation, love of the regional country area and cosmopolitan attitudes are united harmoniously.

Welcome to the “Beuren Open Air Museum”!
Something is always happening in this village. You can come to Beuren and simply look at the more than twenty faithfully re-erected dwellings and commercial houses in the open air museum village. The buildings were brought here from the middle of the Neckar area and the Swabian Hills.

There is an abundance of events offered for adults and children from the end of March to the beginning of November. Taking part in the various activities is part of the experience, and no one has to go hungry in the museum as there is a restaurant with a pleasant “garden café” that has an extensive range of local dishes.

Children are especially delighted with the many chickens, rabbits, sheep and goats which live in the museum village. In the authentic corner shop you can still buy the same kind of goods which were offered in the past. Even the sweeties are still sold loose.

More than twenty buildings here retell the history of those people who lived and worked in them in the past. As well as farmhouses, stables and barns there are also houses, cottages and workshops from artisan families.
Examples are a weaver’s house with a weaver’s dip from the Swabian Hills, a farm-house with a completely equipped joiner’s workshop, a photo studio, a lime-kiln and a village hall which has a teacher’s apartment in it.
Visitors can walk through and look at all the houses. There is a baking day in the museum’s authentic baking house every month. The oven, which once stood in Esslingen-Sulzgries, is heated with wood. The freshly baked bread, sweet cakes and savoury pastries from the oven are offered to visitors.

The complete event program is available free of charge at the museum or can be downloaded from the Internet. For foreign visitors audio guides are available in English and French. Short guide-books are offered in English. Groups also have the possibility to book guided tours in English or French.

TIP
A jump into the water is also worthwhile in Beuren. Hot thermal-mineral waters flow from the karst rocks at a depth of 700 meters into the three inside and four outside pools at the “Panorama Therme”. Amongst the attractions at the spa are a generous sauna facility, extended relaxing areas, a comfortable café, restaurant and a large car park.
